Breitling Acquires Universal Genève! Will the Legendary Watch Be Revived?

Breitling has announced that it has acquired Universal Genève, a company that has produced many famous timepieces. With this acquisition, it is expected that this historic brand will be revived in both name and reality.

The legendary brand is back under the Breitling umbrella

　Breitling announced that it had acquired Universal Genève. Founded in 1894, Universal Genève was one of the few brands capable of developing its own movements in-house. However, like many other brands, it was hit hard by the quartz revolution, and in 1989 it became part of the Hong Kong-based investment company, Stellax Group. While the brand name barely managed to survive, many fans were eagerly awaiting the day it would be resurrected in both name and reality.

　In particular, the Compax Chronograph series, released in 1940, and the Polerouter, a micro-rotor automatic watch from the 1950s designed by watch designer Gérald Genta, are known to still have enthusiastic collectors.

　It was not revealed when or how Universal Genève would be revived as a result of this acquisition, but Breitling CEO Georges Kern stated, "We feel a great responsibility to carry on this great tradition," and Breitling Chairman of the Board Alfred Gunter explained, "Breitling and Universal Genève will be operated as separate maisons." Breitling is currently under the umbrella of the investment company Partner Group. Breitling itself has made great strides since its acquisition, as is already well known. If this is the case, this acquisition is likely to be an outcome that many fans can look forward to.
