Ulysse Nardin has revamped the "Freak X." Its smaller diameter and refined design have resulted in a higher level of perfection.

To coincide with the brand's 180th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the "Freak" model, Ulysse Nardin is completely revamping the "Freak X." This redesign has taken over two years and includes a complete overhaul of the movement, case, and strap system. Notable changes include a smaller 41mm case diameter due to a smaller movement, the first-ever use of a DIAMonSIL escapement and micro-rotor automatic winding mechanism in the Freak X, and the inclusion of a quick-change strap system.

The new "Freak X" has arrived, featuring the Cal.UN-232 movement, which is smaller than that of previous models.

　Ulysse Nardin has completely revamped the "Freak X," from its movement and case to its strap system, and is releasing it in three variations. This redesign coincides with Ulysse Nardin's 180th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the "Freak" model, and it's noteworthy that the entire collection has been redesigned over more than two years.

　The most notable feature is the new Cal.UN-232 movement. The basic structure and display format are the same as the previous Cal.UN-230, with a rotating carousel that rotates once every 60 minutes to display the minutes, and a pointer on a rotating disc that displays the hours. Due to this configuration, the movement size and case size are closely related. While the previous model equipped with the Cal.UN-230 had a diameter of 43mm, the Cal.UN-232 has been optimized and miniaturized, resulting in a compact case diameter of 41mm. This can be said to have given it an even more practical silhouette.

　The Cal.UN-232 features a DIAMonSIL escapement, a first for the Freak X series. DIAMonSIL is also used in the anchor lever, and these components act as a protective shield, resulting in improved accuracy, efficiency, and durability compared to previous models, ensuring more stable operation over extended periods.

　Furthermore, reflecting the technical background of the Freak series as a pioneer in incorporating silicon technology, the Cal.UN-232 also features an oversized silicon balance wheel and hairspring manufactured at Cigatec, Ulysse Nardin's silicon technology laboratory. This hairspring, in particular, incorporates a patented temperature compensation function and has a distinctive egg shape, also a patented technology, which supports the stable operation of this watch.

　A major practical change is the adoption of a micro-rotor in the automatic winding mechanism for the Freak series. The appeal of the micro-rotor lies in its integration with the movement's design, without obscuring the exterior, but it is difficult to improve winding efficiency. Therefore, the Cal. UN-232 employs a rose gold rotor to increase inertia and create a visual contrast. In addition, each component is manufactured with micron-level precision, and the ideal arrangement of each component as designed reduces noise and friction in the entire regulating mechanism, optimizing energy transfer and resulting in a power reserve of approximately 72 hours.

　To mark the debut of the new Freak X, three variations will be available: a stainless steel case with a gray dial, a stainless steel case with a blue dial, and an 18K rose gold case with a black dial.

　The newly designed case, created to complement the refresh, is designed for quick-release straps and offers a variety of straps, including nubuck leather, alligator, rubber, and ballistic nylon, as well as a stainless steel bracelet, allowing for easy strap changes. The bracelet features a curved design that integrates seamlessly with the case, creating a modern look that further enhances the contemporary aesthetic of this timepiece.
