Glashütte Original is holding the "Glashütte Wristwatch 100th Anniversary Exhibition" to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its transition from pocket watches to wristwatches. The exhibition will run from August 8th (Saturday) to August 11th (Tuesday), 2026, at Cite du Temps GINZA, located on the 14th floor of the Nicolas G. Hayek Center in Ginza, Tokyo.
Last year, the Glashütte watchmaking industry celebrated its 180th anniversary. This year, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of full-scale production of wristwatch movements, a special exhibition looking back on the history of Glashütte has been scheduled.
In the 1920s, the watchmaking industry in Glashütte faced an unprecedented crisis due to the downturn in the German economy and the rapid decline in demand for pocket watches. To overcome this situation, Glashütte watchmakers embarked on a new challenge: the manufacture of wristwatches. Overcoming numerous trials, they laid the foundation for the watchmaking tradition that continues to this day. This commemorative exhibition aims to celebrate that history of challenge and the tradition that has been passed down.
The exhibition features 55 timepieces that tell the story of Glashütte's history, including a Julius Assmann pocket watch from 1865, wristwatches from the UFAG/UROFA era, models from the GUB era, and timepieces from the 2000s. This is a rare opportunity to see a historical collection of Glashütte Originals that is not usually on public display, and to trace the company's progress through the actual timepieces. The exhibition is open to the public during its run, and anyone can attend. Glashütte watches have evolved through turbulent times. Watch enthusiasts are sure to be satisfied.
