A new model of Jaquet Droz's signature Grande Seconde, equipped with a moon phase mechanism, has begun arriving in Japan.
Classic moon phase displays have used a moon disc with 59 teeth. This number was doubled to make the 29.5-day synodic cycle an integer so that it could be represented by gears. However, this cycle was set for convenience within a wristwatch mechanism, resulting in an error of one day every two years, seven months, and 20 days. However, this new model uses a new moon disc with 135 teeth. This new "Astronomical Moon Phase" mechanism improves the accuracy of the moon phase display to the point where the error only occurs once every 122 years and 46 days. Incidentally, the moon phase display can be adjusted by pressing the button at 8 o'clock on the side of the case with the sharp-tipped push pen (stylus) included with the watch.
The Grande Seconde Moon, featuring this complex mechanism, is available with three dial designs: ivory-colored Grande Feuillete enamel, opaline silver, and boutique-exclusive black onyx. This new model reflects Jaquet Droz's philosophy of exploring the mysteries of the heavens and the length of time.
