Ahead of Baselworld, Stephen Forsey of Greubel Forsey made an unexpected visit to Japan. Held at the world's first preview of his 2019 new releases, along with an exhibition of highly complex and expensive timepieces, at La Maison de Graziani Kobe, a white Western-style building in Kobe's Kitano district. The exhibition is packed with must-see details for watch enthusiasts, including the three-dimensional structure and complex mechanisms of the new "Art Piece Edition Histrique" and "Contemporary Temp," as well as the exquisite black polishing and intricate engravings.

The first thing that catches the eye about the new Art Piece Edition Historique is the 30° double tourbillon, which sits majestically against a royal blue background. Its "black polished" bridges and hand-beveled and openworked cage columns are visible. The 30° inner tourbillon, which rotates once every minute, and the outer tourbillon, which rotates once every four minutes, create a truly moving sculpture. The small seconds dial is located at 10:30 on the same level. At 4 o'clock, there's a power reserve indicator with large Arabic numerals and blued steel hands. Above that, at 2 o'clock, are off-center hour and minute subdials. The entire subdial is decorated and engraved with inscriptions that represent Greubel Forsey's cherished values. The hours are indicated by a red hand on a disc, while the minutes are displayed on demand, thanks to a complex mechanism that uses a pusher integrated into the crown.
The caseback also features an original geometry, with an opening behind the Double Tourbillon 30°. The extra-large barrel bridge reveals gold chatons and rubies with meticulously hand-polished contours. The signatures of Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey are also embossed. The new Art Piece Edition Historique is a limited edition of 33 pieces, with the first 11 pieces crafted in platinum and the next 22 in other materials. In keeping with the numbers of other Art Pieces produced by Greubel Forsey in the past, the 11 platinum pieces are numbered from 19/51 to 29/51. This numbering is displayed both on the caseback and on a small plate next to the Double Tourbillon 30°. Only the owner will be able to detect this exceptionally rare piece.
The essence of Greubel Forsey resides in the 39.6mm diameter of the Contemporary Balance
In 2017, a balance wheel entirely developed and manufactured in Greubel Forsey's workshops near La Chaux-de-Fonds was unveiled. It was a groundbreaking balance wheel with a diameter of 12.6 mm, ensuring stable rate accuracy. To precisely adjust the moment of inertia, the rim was equipped with six gold meantime screws, designed to reduce air friction. Initially released, this exclusive regulator was called the "Balancier" limited edition and housed in Greubel Forsey's signature white gold asymmetrical case, measuring 43.5 mm in diameter and 13.94 mm high.
The new 39.6mm diameter "Contemporary Temp" retains its characteristic large balance, but the movement has been completely redesigned. Volume has been reduced without compromising precision. Not only does the series-arranged twin barrels (one of which is equipped with a slip spring to relieve excessive force) ensure a 72-hour power reserve, but the new hand-wound caliber also guarantees extremely stable rate accuracy. The movement is equipped with a "balance stop" function activated by the crown, allowing the time to be adjusted accurately to the second.
