This year marks the 50th anniversary of the birth of the Hamilton Pulsar, the pioneering LED digital watch, and Hamilton is releasing a reissue model, the Hamilton PSR. Pre-orders will begin in May 2020, with general sales beginning in June.
Hamilton Pulsar, the world's first LED digital watch
The world's first LED digital watch, the Hamilton Pulsar, was unveiled in New York in 1970. This watch displayed numbers in red on the screen by pressing a button on the side. The initial model, the P1, released in 1972, featured a futuristic case and an 18K yellow gold bracelet and was limited to 400 pieces. The following year, the P2 was announced and began general sales. With a stainless steel case that was more rounded than the P1, the P2 pioneered the digital watch market and was a huge success.
Retro-futuristic reproduction model "Hamilton PSR"
The newly announced Hamilton PSR is based on the P2, released in 1973, and reproduces its distinctive case shape and size. Its retro-futuristic design is a testament to its exceptionally modern aesthetic. However, the time display has undergone significant changes. Unlike the original, which displayed the time by simply pressing a button, the time display on the reissue is always on, and the screen illuminates brighter with the press of a button. The reissue also features a hybrid display that combines LCD and OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology, reducing display power consumption. The watch incorporates the latest technology without losing the original feel.
In addition to the stainless steel case model based on the P2, the lineup also includes a yellow gold PVD case model reminiscent of the rare early model P1. The yellow gold PVD model will be released in a limited edition of 1970 pieces, in honor of the year the Hamilton Pulsar was released.
Pre-orders for the Hamilton PSR will begin at Hamilton retail stores in Tokyo and the Hamilton online boutique from early May 2020. Pre-orders are also available at BEAMS retail stores and the official BEAMS online shop. General sales are scheduled to begin at authorized Hamilton retailers nationwide from June.
