In 2019, the Bauhaus celebrated its 100th anniversary. It was a comprehensive educational institution for art and architecture founded in 1919 in the central German city of Weimar. Due to social conditions, the school relocated several times, eventually closing in 1933. However, the functionalist ideas underlying the school became the origin of modern design, and have influenced many products ever since. Watches are no exception, and it's still fresh in our memory that several brands embracing this trend released models last year to celebrate their 100th anniversary. Now, this year, marking the milestone, Junghans has unveiled the Max Bill Automatic Bauhaus, a watch that expresses their strong connection to the Bauhaus.
This model, based on Junghans' signature Max Bill Automatic, pays homage to the Bauhaus school building when it was relocated to Dessau. The red used on the date display and hour and minute hands evokes the school's iconic red doors. This is not just a design element; it actually enhances legibility, demonstrating the company's authentic adherence to functionalist principles. The case back features an illustration of the school building. Not only are the vertical "BAUHAUS" inscription and the red doors faithfully reproduced, but the façade offers an intricate glimpse into the automatic movement inside. This model also features a sapphire crystal crystal, which is more durable than the plastic crystals commonly used in the past.

The "Max Bill" collection is based on a kitchen clock designed for Junghans in 1956 by Bauhaus graduate Max Bill. Over that time, the watches themselves have evolved. However, the essential functions people seek in a watch remain timeless, unchanging through the ages.
