Citizen completes prototype lunar lander parts made from its proprietary material "Super Titanium™"

Citizen has announced that it has completed a prototype using its proprietary material, Super Titanium™, which is planned to be used for some of the landing gear parts of the lander (lunar lander) for ispace Inc., a private lunar exploration program with which Citizen has a corporate partner agreement, HAKUTO-R.

HAKUTO-R is currently developing a lander and rover with the aim of landing on the moon in 2022. Engineers from both companies will continue to work together to manufacture a flight model, which will undoubtedly lead to success.

The prototype parts made from Super Titanium™ are the rotating shaft and connecting parts of the landing legs. To withstand the impact of landing on the moon, the landing legs require a light, strong material. Furthermore, because the rotating shaft and connecting parts are moving parts, they need to be smooth in addition to being hard. The surface hardening technology used in the parts, Duratect DLC, is not only scratch-resistant but also has the advantage of producing an extremely smooth surface.

 While DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) is a commonly used technology, Citizen's Duratect DLC has improved adhesion through meticulous attention to the intermediate material. The surface treatment is resistant to peeling and has excellent durability. Furthermore, Citizen has been particular about not only strength but also the aesthetic beauty of the material used in watches. The unique titanium processing technology, which has been cultivated for 50 years for the practicality and aesthetics of watches, was deemed suitable for use in spacecraft due to its lightness, strength, and smooth material with low friction, and prototypes for lander parts were completed.


Super Titanium is approximately 40% lighter than stainless steel and highly scratch-resistant

Duratect

Citizen's proprietary technology applies Duratect surface hardening technology to pure titanium, making it approximately five times harder than stainless steel. It's scratch-resistant, lightweight, and gentle on the skin, making it comfortable to wear. (The Vickers hardness of stainless steel is approximately 200Hv.) Since Citizen introduced the world's first titanium-cased wristwatch in 1970, it has evolved into Super Titanium™ over the past 50 years.
