Calatrava Pilot Travel Time 5524, a timepiece for the modern traveler, released in 2015
In 2015, Patek Philippe surprised the world with a watch with an unusual style: a 42 mm round case with clearly cut-outs and a dial with large white numerals and luminous hands contrasting against a dark background. Both the name and functional design of this timepiece evoked early aviator watches. In fact, Patek Philippe was inspired by a special hour-angle siderometer (which allowed pilots to easily, quickly, and accurately determine their current position) created by the manufacture in 1936 and now housed at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva.
With the Calatrava Pilot's Travel Time Ref. 5524, Patek Philippe once again demonstrated its commitment to the aviation industry. However, Patek Philippe was not satisfied with simply reissuing a historic timepiece. Instead of the usual black dial of pilot's watches, the dial features the original, elegant blue, providing excellent contrast for readability. Furthermore, the highly user-friendly Travel Time mechanism, patented by Patek Philippe in 1959 and 1996, allows for a second time zone display. Featuring two central hour hands and two push-pieces for changing the time zone, the hour hand showing the local time can be moved forward or backward in one-hour increments. This multifunctional model also features a hand displaying the local date.
In 2018, the medium-sized family 7234R was born.
In 2018, Patek Philippe reinterpreted the original Calatrava Pilot Travel Time with a new rose gold case and brown dial. That same year, the manufacture introduced a medium-sized model (37.5 mm), also in rose gold, aimed at women and men who prefer watches with classic, more modest proportions.
2019: Grand Complication Alarm Travel Time 5520
In 2019, the Pilot Style received ultimate recognition with the introduction of the Alarm Travel Time Ref. 5520, a grand complication combining dual time zones and a 24-hour alarm. Further limited editions were created for the Watch Art Grand Exhibition New York 2017 (Ref. 5522A) and the Watch Art Grand Exhibition Singapore 2019 (Ref. 7234A).

A medium-sized version of the 5524G model introduced in 2015, the new Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Ref. 7234G is sized (37.5 mm) to fit any wrist, male or female. Its round white gold Calatrava case features a pure design, with a smooth bezel that curves slightly outwards.
The blue dial, inspired by aviation watches, boasts excellent visibility even in the dark thanks to the white gold applied numerals and baton-shaped blued white gold hour and minute hands with luminous recesses. A design that is technical, timeless and full of elegance.
In addition to the brilliant navy blue calfskin, a second strap is included in vintage brown calfskin with contrasting light stitching. These interchangeable straps create a softer look, making them suitable for both men and women.
The Calatrava Pilot Travel Time 7234G-001 model may have the face of an aviation watch, but it's a travel watch for those who fly first class around the world.
The skeleton hour hand continues to indicate the time at the home location, while the regular hour hand displays the local time. Day/night at the home location and the local time are indicated by small round apertures at the 3 o'clock position (HOME) and 9 o'clock position (LOCAL), respectively.
The white gold applied numerals with luminous recesses and the blued white gold baton hour and minute hands ensure maximum legibility, even in the dark. A round aperture at 9 o'clock indicates the local day/night time.
The crown that controls the mainspring winding and minute hand is not screwed in. The crown head is carefully polished and engraved with the Calatrava cross.
To prevent the risk of accidentally changing the local time, the two pushers are equipped with a patented security system: before operation, turn the pushers a quarter turn to unlock them, and then turn them a quarter turn again to lock them in place.
The automatic Caliber 324 SC FUS is 31 mm in diameter, 4.9 mm thick, and consists of 294 parts. The mainspring is wound by a 21-karat gold rotor, and the continuous running time is a minimum of 35 hours and a maximum of 45 hours.
The watch is equipped with the manual-wound caliber CH 29-535 PS Q.
The two pushers feature a patented security system to prevent accidental changes to the local time. Before changing the time, first turn the pusher a quarter turn to unlock it (the knurled mechanism makes this easy). When you're finished, turn it a quarter turn again to lock it in place. The date display subdial at 6 o'clock displays the date in numerals every three days, keeping the dial simple yet easy to read. The date display is always synchronized with the local time, making it extremely convenient to use while traveling. When changing the local time using the pusher, the date display changes synchronously whether moving forward or backward.
The Caliber 324 SC FUS automatic movement, consisting of 294 components, features an extremely easy-to-operate dual time zone mechanism. By pressing one of the two pushers on the left side of the case, the regular hour hand can be advanced (lower pusher) or advanced (upper pusher) in one-hour increments. Because this hand is independent of the rest of the movement, the accuracy of the watch's minute and second displays is completely unaffected. Meanwhile, the skeletonized hour hand continues to indicate the time at your home location. Day and night information for your home and local locations is displayed through small circular apertures at 3 o'clock (HOME) and 9 o'clock (LOCAL), respectively, making time adjustments easy and eliminating the risk of accidentally waking up a caller halfway around the world. When not traveling abroad, the two hour hands can be perfectly overlapped for use as a regular watch. Although not visible in the image, there is also a date adjustment button on the side of the case at 6 o'clock.
