2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the Flying Tourbillon, one of the most sophisticated inventions in luxury watchmaking. It is said to have been designed by master Glashütte watchmaker Alfred Helwig. To celebrate his achievement, Glashütte Original has unveiled the Alfred Helwig Tourbillon 1920 – Limited Edition, featuring a classic and elegant dial.

The flying tourbillon is said to have been developed in Glashütte in 1920 by Alfred Helwig, one of Germany's greatest watchmakers. Unlike traditional tourbillons, which were fixed on both sides, Helwig's elegant design had only one side fixed to the back, giving the tourbillon the appearance of flying, or floating, within the cage.

This stunning masterpiece with a rose gold case is limited to 25 pieces. The dial is solid gold with a brushed silver coating. The railroad index ring and applied bar indices give it an elegant and classic look, while the filigree-finished rose gold baton-style hands complete the overall understated look.

Tourbillon hidden on the back of the case

The most eye-catching feature is the seconds display at 6 o'clock, which is engraved with the word "Tourbillon." However, as with many historic pocket watches from Helwig's time, the famous flying tourbillon is hidden on the back of the movement.
