Oceana, the world's largest international organization dedicated to ocean conservation, has announced that it has selected Blancpain as its exclusive watch partner, supporting Oceana's campaign to restore the oceans and Blancpain's commitment to ocean exploration and conservation.

Aiming to prevent overfishing and plastic pollution

Andrew Sharpless, CEO of Oceana, said, "We are incredibly grateful for Blancpain's support. Blancpain's backing will help our campaign teams achieve science-based ocean stewardship, including stopping overfishing, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss. It will add to the hundreds of policy wins we have already achieved and nearly 400 million square miles of marine protected areas. Together, we can protect the oceans and help feed the world."

My goal for 2021 is to explore Mexico's "Scorpion Reef"

As part of this partnership, Oceana and Blancpain are planning a research expedition to Scorpion Reef, one of the world's largest coral reefs, located in the southern Gulf of Mexico, in the summer of 2021. Home to more than 500 species of fish and 34 species of coral, Scorpion Reef is a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the Mexican government has designated the area as a national park. Recent studies have revealed that Scorpion Reef is a healthy and diverse reef that is resistant to the effects of climate change.

"While the current biodiversity and resilience are impressive, there are few rules to limit overfishing. During the expedition, Oceana and Blancpain will document the reef and its marine life using underwater photography and videography, cutting-edge scientific techniques such as eDNA analysis and 3D photomosaic modeling. Oceana will use these findings in a campaign to encourage the Mexican government to do more to protect Scorpion Reef."

The partnership between Oceana and Blancpain was announced at Oceana's annual New York Gala, which raised more than $120 million for ocean conservation. As the event's Atlantic sponsor, Blancpain donated a Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III watch for a private auction.
