In 2016, Audemars Piguet collaborated with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne to analyze the sound of minute repeaters, which is considered pleasant to the ear. A newly developed sounding board with a gong attached resonates with the vibrations of the hammer, which are then amplified by the cavity between the sounding board and the case back, resulting in the development of the Supersonnerie, which produces a rich tone similar to that of a pocket watch. The improved movement was first installed in the Royal Oak in 2018, and the newly announced "Royal Oak Minute Repeater Supersonnerie" (with a Japan-exclusive dial) is equipped with the improved caliber 2959.
