Speake-Marin's new work for 2020, "Art Series 'Rhino'"

　With a focus on environmental and social challenges facing the 21st century, Speake-Marin has launched several initiatives to make a positive impact on the world as a watch brand. One of its new projects is the annual release of a limited edition "Art Series" model dedicated to endangered species. A portion of the sales will be donated to specific organizations engaged in conservation activities. This year, in its first year, the brand has partnered with London-based international rhino conservation organization "Save the Rhino International" to produce nine limited edition models. This conservation organization works to protect rhino habitats, reduce illegal trade, and bring together local communities and experts to ensure that all five rhino species can survive in the wild.

　Through this project, Speake-Marin will donate 3,000 Swiss francs for each limited edition watch sold to help protect the critically endangered rhinos living in the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Indonesia.

The rhinoceros engraving is entirely done by hand

　In 2016, Speake Marine began designing and developing the Art Series, a collection of watches that highlights craftsmanship. Speake Marine's Art Series incorporates a variety of traditional artisan techniques, including enameling, hand-engraved decoration, and the Japanese lacquer art technique of maki-e. Engraving, in particular, is part of Speake Marine's DNA, as evidenced by the beautiful dials of the Art Series watches, which feature a greater variety of engraved decorative designs, such as skulls, dragons, and animals. Speake Marine uses both hand-engraved and chemical-engraved decorative techniques, depending on the complexity of the design.

For our latest limited edition model, we created a rhino design in our Creation Studio, then hand-engraved (over 40 hours) a special master stamp to recreate the design on each dial. The silver-plated, hand-engraved rhino is then hand-finished using oxidizing acid to create a beautiful, unique gray gradient. Finally, approximately 15 layers of black lacquer are applied to achieve the perfect color and finish on the dial.

Special wooden strap

　Speake-Marin presents a special eco-friendly strap for this new limited edition model. The bracelet is made from linden wood (Tilia spp.) with an inner layer of natural cork. The wood source is 100% SFC certified, meaning the wood comes from responsibly managed forests that fully meet environmental and social standards. Linden combines both durability and flexibility.
