As the third collaboration with the Carl Brashear Foundation, which spreads the story of Carl Brashear, the first Black diver in the United States Navy and the first one-legged master diver, Oris has announced the Oris Carl Brashear Calibre 401 Limited Edition, the first watch to feature the in-house developed Calibre 401, which is highly resistant to magnetic fields and has a five-day power reserve.
Who is Carl Brashear?
Born into a poor rural family, Carl Brashear overcame racism, a lack of education, and a work-related accident that thwarted his ambitions to become the first Black diver in the United States Navy and the first one-legged master diver. He is a man of conviction who inspires many around the world.
Carl Brashear's story was made into a film called Men of Honour, starring Oscar-winning actors Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert De Niro.
"It is not a sin to fall, but it is a sin to stay fallen" - Carl Brashear
In 1948, Carl Brashear, who had very little education, enlisted in the United States Navy with the dream of becoming a naval diver. Despite racial discrimination and various restrictions, he became the first African-American to serve in the Navy in 1954. However, in 1966, he lost his left leg below the knee in an accident while on duty off the coast of Spain.
The Navy attempted to retire Carl Brashear after he became disabled, but he refused and continued to serve as the first one-legged diver in history, an unprecedented feat at the time. He retired in 1979. The Carl Brashear Foundation, a US-based non-profit organization established to preserve Carl Brashear's extraordinary life, has already donated thousands of dollars to veterans' hospitals and helped injured service members reintegrate into society.

Uses more than 30 anti-magnetic parts, including a silicon escapement
Bronze is a natural material that changes over time with the oxygen in the air and the moisture in the wearer's skin, developing a unique finish that reflects the wearer's personality and records the years.
The blue dial is inspired by the traditional colors of the navy, and features a unidirectional rotating bezel engraved with a diving scale. It is fitted with a special handmade original strap made by ERIKA using sweat-absorbing and wicking stretch nylon thread.
Caliber 401 boasts magnetic resistance of approximately 180,000 A/m
Silicon is used for the pallet and escape wheel, and non-ferrous metals are used for the balance wheel, escape wheel, and pallet shaft. Non-ferrous or anti-magnetic metals are also used for more than 30 other parts, enhancing magnetic resistance. Caliber 400 is more than 90% less susceptible to magnetic fields than a typical Swiss mechanical movement.
Caliber 401 is a movement based on the Caliber 400, developed in-house by Oris and released last year, and boasts accuracy exceeding that of a chronometer (-3/+5 per day).
In addition to its high magnetic resistance, it also boasts a five-day power reserve and an extended warranty of up to 10 years. The new model, equipped with the latest movement, is limited to 2,000 pieces worldwide, comes in a special box and is priced at an affordable 450,000 yen.
