Richard Mille teams up with Swiss boat manufacturer SP80 to set new world record for fastest sailing yacht

Richard Mille is supporting the Swiss boat manufacturer SP80 in their latest attempt to break the world's fastest yacht record in 2022. North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT™), a global leader in prepreg materials, is also joining the effort by providing Carbon TPT® for the hull, allowing the team to begin the crucial construction phase of the yacht, which will enable it to achieve a speed of 150 km/h (80 knots) powered solely by wind.

 Richard Mille has always been fascinated by speed, aeronautics and extreme development. When long-time partner NTPT™, which exclusively produces the Carbon TPT® for Richard Mille's watch cases, introduced this project to the brand, it was no surprise to support such an ambitious endeavor. "SP80 is driven by ambition and unafraid to challenge the boundaries of sailing. This boldness has been a guiding principle for our brand, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. SP80 was founded in 2018 by three engineers, Xavier Leperc, Benoît Goddio, and Mayur van den Broeck, who share a passion for kitesurfing, all types of yachting, and ocean crossings. The team currently consists of approximately 40 engineers and students from EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne). To break the world speed record of 65 knots (121 km/h) set in 2012, the SP80 team embarked on the development of an entirely new solution: a yacht with a unique design: a 7-meter-long, 6-meter-wide hull made entirely of Carbon TPT®, pulled by a kite with a wingspan of over 20 meters.

 Drawing a cross between boats, airplanes and Formula 1, the design studio has developed a special foil (hydrofoil) called the "Super Ventilator" that presses the yacht against the water's surface, ensuring stability at high speeds. This technology prevents cavitation, a phenomenon in which a sudden drop in pressure causes water to vaporize and inhibit performance. The studio has also filed a patent for a power management system that transfers the kite's thrust directly to the yacht's foil while maintaining stability at high speeds. This invention is sure to bring about a revolution.
