A revival of the classic mechanical divers

Seiko has announced two new models for 2021, featuring a fabric strap, a first for Seiko divers. This material is the first to be used in Seiko's 55-year history of diver watches, and traditional Japanese techniques have been used to enhance durability so that the straps can be worn without any issues during diving, which requires a tough watch.

The first Japanese-made diver's watch, released in 1965, was worn in harsh environments such as the Antarctic in the 1960s, proving its functionality and reliability. This was the starting point for Seiko's development of specialized watches, and the technology cultivated here was later used in pilot watches and adventure watches.

The two new models announced this time are modern interpretations of mechanical divers produced in 1965 (first generation) and 1970. Since releasing the first domestically produced diver's watch in 1965, the company has a history of developing a series of products that make full use of its own unique technology.

The mechanical diver's watch, released in 1970, features a unique design characterized by its rounded, streamlined form. Adventurer Naomi Uemura wore this model during his 12,000km dog sled journey through the Arctic Circle from 1974 to 1976, proving its high reliability in extremely harsh environments.

Carrying on the tradition of these archive pieces, the collection is based on the original design, with modern interpretations added throughout.

Automatic movement (Cal. 6R35). 24 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve approximately 70 hours. Stainless steel (diameter 40.5 mm, thickness 13.2 mm). Water resistant to 200 m. Price: 148,500 yen (tax included). Scheduled for release on July 25, 2021.

What's particularly noteworthy about this model is that it's the first Seiko diver's watch to feature a fabric strap. Designed to suit modern lifestyles, it can be worn in a wide range of situations.

This strap is woven using a traditional Japanese technique called "seichu," which is also used for obi-jime (sash bands) for kimonos, and offers a variety of benefits, including high tensile strength to withstand heavy loads and high resistance to strong ultraviolet rays, making it resistant to deterioration.

Unlike regular woven cords, the threads are woven diagonally and knitted into a bag-like shape, resulting in no gaps on the edges and excellent breathability, making the strap feel pleasant to the touch. While the fabric strap has a casual impression, it has a warm and elegant finish that creates unique shadows depending on the light.

Additionally, the straps can be changed without tools, and each model comes with one strap in a different color. This casual style allows you to coordinate your watch to suit your mood and outfit, which is very modern. The "lacing" technique is not only beautiful but also highly practical, meeting Seiko's high performance standards, which have contributed to the establishment of JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) and ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards for diver's watches.
