The Citizen's latest "Tosa Washi Dial" is here!

Citizen's premium brand, "The Citizen," has released a new watch featuring a dial made from Tosa Tengujo paper, the world's thinnest washi paper. Equipped with a solar-powered Eco-Drive system, it boasts high accuracy of ±5 seconds per year. A limited run of 400 pieces will be released on July 8, 2021.

Expressing the fantastic night sea

　Citizen will release a new limited edition model from its high-quality brand, "The Citizen," which boasts outstanding precision. The latest model is inspired by the mystical image of the night sea, and the dial is made of "Tosa Tengujo paper."

　Tosa washi, made from natural materials and craftsmanship, is considered one of Japan's three major washi papers, alongside Echizen washi from Fukui Prefecture and Mino washi from Gifu Prefecture. It has been produced in the Tosa area of ​​Kochi Prefecture for over 1000 years and is made from raw materials such as kozo (paper mulberry), mitsumata (Japanese mulberry), and gampi (gampi bark).

　One of the characteristics of Tosa washi is that it is both thin and durable. Tosa Tengujo paper, which is mainly used for restoring cultural properties and has received high praise both in Japan and overseas, is about 0.03 to 0.05 mm thick and is said to be the thinnest of all handmade washi papers.

　The Citizen has previously used washi paper for the dials of several of its models. Washi paper, which has long been used on shoji screens and other items to let light into rooms, is a suitable material for Eco-Drive watches, which generate electricity using solar panels beneath the dial.

　The scene depicted on this dial is of a night sea with the stars in the sky reflected, illuminated by the lights of the townspeople on the opposite shore and by bioluminescent creatures in the sea, such as bioluminescent plankton. Crafted from natural materials and craftsmanship, each piece of Tosa washi paper has a slightly different texture, evoking the sensation of the shimmering sea surface.

Equipped with a highly accurate annual quartz movement

　The watch's solar-powered Eco-Drive movement, Cal. A060, boasts an annual accuracy of ±5 seconds. It also features the company's unique shock detection function, which prevents misalignment of the hands when the watch is subjected to shock, and an automatic correction function if the hands are misaligned. The simple date display at 3 o'clock is a perpetual calendar that requires no adjustment, even for leap years.

Case material with excellent properties

　The case and bracelet are made of ultra-hard, lightweight Super Titanium™, treated with Citizen's proprietary surface hardening technology, Duratect α. The surface hardness of the titanium treated with Duratect α is equivalent to that of sapphire crystal, giving it a beautiful, precious metal-like appearance.

What is the meaning behind the eagle mark?

　The eagle mark is adorned at the 6 o'clock position on the dial, on the crown, and on the case back. The eagle, with its eyesight that allows it to capture prey from afar, symbolizes the foresight to act with an eye to the future, as well as the ability to build partnerships with people. The Citizen uses the eagle as its symbol to represent two aims: "always looking ahead and pursuing the ideal" and "standing by the wearer for a long time."
