Russian independent watchmaker Anton Sukhanov announces his first wristwatch, the Racer Jumping Hour GMT.

　ANTON SUHANOV, an independent watchmaker from St. Petersburg, Russia, has announced his first wristwatch, the RACER Jumping Hour GMT. With a tachometer on the left and a speedometer on the right, the design is instantly recognizable as a car dashboard, but it is a triple jumping hour watch that is completely different from a chronograph.

　Anton Sukhanov said: "There are watches you look at once an hour or several times a day, and others you want to look at constantly, so as not to miss a special moment. My recipe is a combination of dynamic moments and a slower appreciation of the passage of time. With my watches, you experience time differently. At one point, you're watching every second, as if you're in a race; at another moment, it's literally seconds, and you're driving confidently, counting the miles slowly, all under control as the world passes by your car window."

The reality of making high-end watches in Russia

　Making a watch has always been a highly complex, expensive, and painstaking process, especially if it is done according to the highest standards of traditional Swiss watchmaking. Unlike Swiss watchmakers, who can choose where to source the parts needed for their watches (either making them in-house or using suppliers), independent Russian watchmakers do not have this option.

Currently, there are no suppliers in Russia that can provide parts with the required high-end characteristics and the appropriate level of finish quality, so the entire process - from design, engineering, technical preparation, production control, finishing and assembly - is carried out in-house by Anton Sukhanov.

The parts were hand-polished and bevelled, engraved, and the screws, pins and hole stones were polished, and traditional techniques were used to finish the parts, including circular graining, fine straightening, circular grinding, sandblasting and rhodium plating.

　After earning a PhD in CAD (Computer-Aided Design)/CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) from St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Russian watchmaker Anton Suhanov worked at a defense company's design bureau. In 2007, he had a fateful encounter with Russian watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin, and spent 10 years working as a constructor and production director at his workshop. In 2016, Anton won the Basel Watchmaking Competition, where he met many talented watchmakers, influencing his vision for the watch industry. In 2019, he founded his own workshop, ANTON SUHANOV.
