Daniel Buren's Trilobe clock "La Réciproque" is up for sale on Only Watch

The new French brand Trilobe has announced their new work "La Réciproque" (The Reciprocity), which will be exhibited at this year's Only Watch. The piece is not a wristwatch, but a one-of-a-kind clock, with the exterior designed by French artist Daniel Buren.

An original clock that shows the time with three rings

Trilobe has announced the unique piece "La Réciproque" (The Reciprocity) that will be auctioned at the biennial charity auction "Only Watch." Trilobe is a new French brand founded by Gautier Massonneau in 2018.

　With the concept of "liberating time," the brand creates pieces that incorporate unconventional time displays. Their signature piece, "Les Matineaux," features three rings that rotate counterclockwise and the brand's iconic "trefoil" that indicates the current time. In addition to its excellent design, this piece, which features a dedicated movement, is quietly attracting attention from watch enthusiasts.

　The newly announced "La Réciproque" clock uses the same dial design as the "Les Matineaux" clock. Three offset rings for the hours, minutes, and seconds indicate the current time along with a trefoil mark.

　This unique clock, made in a single piece, was created in collaboration with the world-renowned French conceptual artist Daniel Buren. As its name suggests, it is based on the theme of "contradictions," and features a black and white striped pattern across the clock.

　The pattern is also present on the rotating ring, revealing different patterns over the course of the day. The complete stripe appears twice a day at 2:13, representing the time when Trilobe and Daniel Buren first met.

A crimson movement that produces unique movements

Instead of the Caliber X-Centric movement used in Les Matineaux, this model is equipped with the Caliber D-Centric movement, a movement made specifically for clocks. It took several months of work to craft it by a clockmaker in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland.

　The design makes the most of the spaciousness of the clock, harmonizing the Trilobe design code with Daniel Buren's artistic perspective. Many of the parts are uniquely coated in red. The beautifully finished D-Centric display can be seen through the glass back.

　This watch is not only unique in appearance, but also in functionality. Its two parallel barrels are clearly visible from the outside, providing a power reserve of approximately eight days. It also features a constant-force mechanism, which stabilizes the torque transmitted from the mainspring, resulting in more accurate timekeeping.

　Among the works on offer, the clock "La Réciproque" (The Reciprocity) stands out as a unique piece. Its estimated price is between 35,000 and 45,000 Swiss francs, but who will it end up being?
