Roger Dubuis unveils the new Excalibur Dr. Woo Monotourbillon, a fusion of two worlds

Roger Dubuis has now launched the new Excalibur Dr. Woo Monotourbillon, a timepiece like a masterpiece born from innovation and craftsmanship that truly pushes boundaries and breaks new ground.

Urban culture meets the Roger Dubuis Manufacture

　Exploring unexpected locales for inspiration is in Roger Dubuis' DNA, and this time the brand has partnered with some of the world's most renowned urban culture artists to develop new timepiece designs.

　One of the artists we partnered with is Dr. Woo, a world-renowned tattoo artist. His skills are said to be among the best in the world, and celebrities from all walks of life request his work to be inked on their bodies. Watchmakers who bring imagination to life joined forces with artists with vision to create the Excalibur Monotourbillon, a timepiece brought to life by a striking image.

The iconic Excalibur Monotourbillon

　Roger Dubuis shook up the world of Haute Horlogerie with the launch of the new Excalibur Single Flying Tourbillon (Monotourbillon) at the beginning of 2021. This meticulously crafted timepiece is reinterpreted with a refined sensibility, using modern, technical materials.

Cal. RD512SQ: the culmination of groundbreaking technology

　The RD512SQ caliber, which perfectly expresses the watchmakers' craftsmanship, is a culmination of groundbreaking technology. By using an upper tourbillon cage made of non-magnetic cobalt chrome, which is twice as light as stainless steel, the carriage's efficiency has been maximized, resulting in a weight reduction of 16%.

　As a result, the caliber's anti-magnetic properties have been improved, and its power reserve has been significantly improved to approximately 72 hours. In addition to this mechanical prowess, each part is hand-decorated, and the watch holds the prestigious Geneva Hallmark, a symbol of Haute Horlogerie. Furthermore, the sandblasted top surface and polished angles are decorations that are unexpected even among Haute Horlogerie.

　This latest model explores new design possibilities for this innovative, iconic Roger Dubuis monotourbillon.

The iconic symbol of the star is the signature of this work.

　Over the course of several months of collaboration, both Roger Dubuis and Dr. Woo realized that the star is an important symbol, and this became the guiding principle for this collaboration. Dr. Woo had this to say about this project and the artwork:

"Roger Dubuis entrusted me with the signature star that gave my creativity flight, allowing me to combine two worlds into one unique masterpiece."

　Dr. Woo's designs reflect his special connection to the universe in many ways. The geometric codes and planets scattered across the dial represent his mental map of the universe. His world also brings other minimalist graphic symbols, such as the moon as a source of energy, a triangle rising from the earth, and a circle symbolizing the eternal connection within us. By juxtaposing them, Dr. Woo reveals a new language, the interpretation of which is left to the viewer.

Delicate etchings that bring Dr. Woo's inspiration to life

　Watchmaking craftsmanship has been taken to a new level to realize the inspiration of artist Dr. Woo. Inspired by Dr. Woo's needlework, gold is vapor-deposited and etched onto the sapphire crystal to create a delicate, flowing and astonishing star design on the dial.

　Furthermore, delicate lines have been laser engraved on the movement's black PVD plate, expressing the artist's vision of the universe, while the same process has been used to create delicate hand-painted decorations on the 18K Aeon Gold™ (a 750/1000 5N gold alloy that is resistant to tarnish even in harsh environments) caseback.
