OMEGA unveils new technology at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games

With the opening of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games fast approaching, Omega has unveiled a number of new timekeeping technologies that will be used at the event. We're excited to see Omega's innovative technologies, which will be used to time the records set by top athletes, including the analysis of figure skating jumps and the detection of false starts in speed skating.

Numerous innovative new technologies

　The Beijing 2022 Olympic Games will hold their opening ceremony on Friday, February 4, 2022. This will be OMEGA's 30th time as the official timekeeper, marking a major milestone for the brand.

　At Beijing 2022, OMEGA will continue to develop real-time data measurement technology, using a completely new generation of innovative technology to relentlessly track and measure the performances of the world's top athletes. The revolution in sports timing, introduced at the PyeongChang Games with OMEGA's motion sensors and positioning system, will continue at the upcoming Beijing 2022 Games, providing spectators with a deeper way to understand and enjoy the competitions.

Figure skating jump analysis

　OMEGA's motion sensor and positioning system will now be deployed in figure skating, with six cameras installed around the rink collecting live data during individual performances, enabling real-time measurements of jump height, distance, air time and other data.

　By tracking the athletes' positions and movements, the new system will provide a wide range of information, allowing viewers to better understand the athletes' performances and compare them with those of other athletes.

Detection of false starts in speed skating

　The Beijing 2022 Games will see a complete overhaul of the method for detecting false starts. Until now, speed skating has relied on judges visually checking the movements of athletes and their skates before the start.

　OMEGA will utilize an image tracking system at this competition, enabling visual detection of false starts, providing high reliability at the crucial start of the competition. One image tracking camera will be placed in each lane, and the footage will be directly monitored by official judges. In the unlikely event that a false start is detected, the judges will be notified immediately.

Ice hockey in-game display

　In ice hockey, a new in-game display has been introduced with LEDs integrated into the acrylic panels around the rink, which shows the game time and penalty times.

　The display, located between the two penalty boxes in the center of the rink, will allow players and coaches to continuously view important information during the game.
