Theme: Night Diving. Seiko Prospex announces new model in "The Black Series"

Four new models with a "night diving" theme have been added to Seiko Prospex's "The Black Series." Each model features a black exterior, evoking the darkness of the ocean at night, with orange accents inspired by the light of underwater lights. All models are limited editions and will be available from Friday, March 11, 2022.

Modern Seiko Divers in Black and Orange

　Since its launch in 1965 as Japan's first diver's watch, Seiko has produced a succession of models incorporating unique technologies. In 1968, the company introduced a watch with a one-piece case without a back cover, equipped with a high-precision movement that ticked at a high beat rate of 10 vibrations, and was water resistant to 300 meters.

　This model, released in 1970 and featuring a distinctive crown guard at the 4 o'clock position, was taken by renowned adventurer Naomi Uemura on his dog sled journey of approximately 12,000 km across the Arctic Circle from 1974 to 1976, demonstrating its high reliability and safety in harsh environments.

　Now, four new models have been added to the series, which combine these milestones with a modern design arrangement and express the unique world of "The Black Series" unified in black. First up is the series' first bracelet model, equipped with a movement made at the Shizukuishi Luxury Watch Workshop.

Based on the "1970 Mechanical Divers," this model retains the striking form of the original while offering significant improvements in functionality. It boasts 200m water resistance, befitting modern professional divers, and is equipped with the Cal. 8L35 movement, exclusive to Seiko Prospex diver watches.

　The dial features a delicate dial pattern reminiscent of sand-grained ripples, evoking the image of the ocean floor in the dim light. The five-row metal bracelet, a first for this series, is coated with the same black hard coating as the case, highlighting the orange accents. An optional strap made of reinforced silicone is also included.

　Three models are also available, combining the design of the original model with a supple fabric strap. While each model retains the design of the three Milestone models created in 1965, 1968, and 1970, they are given a modern look by being covered in black. In the dark, Seiko's proprietary Lumibrite technology illuminates in three colors, ensuring high visibility. The movement is the caliber 6R35, which has a long 70-hour power reserve, making it highly practical.

　The distinctive straps are made from a fabric woven using a traditional Japanese technique called "seichu," and are the first to be used in The Black Series. They maintain high durability, offer a comfortable fit that feels good against the skin, and have an elegant finish, making them aesthetically pleasing. The included black reinforced silicone strap greatly expands the range of situations in which they can be worn. Both are limited edition models and will be available from Friday, March 11, 2022.
