Louis Vuitton has created a high-jewelry watch featuring three pop icons: a fortune teller, a casino dealer, and a circus acrobat. Each watch features a unique jumping hour display that alternates positions.

The casino's world is enhanced by a dial crafted from a newly discovered skarn, a type of ornamental gemstone from Pakistan. Also known as Sannan skarn, its vibrant green hue is due to the presence of the element chromium. Its fine texture was created through a process that occurred deep underground millions of years ago.

A playful timepiece that expresses a complex mechanism in a pop style

Louis Vuitton's enigmatic character, Vivienne, first appeared in 2017 and has since graced collections in a variety of designs, including objects, accessories, and leather goods.

The deep aventurine dial features Louis Vuitton character Vivienne dressed as a fortune teller, and the shiny blue alligator strap adds a touch of mystery.

Among the new releases for 2021 was a design based on the concept of Vivienne enjoying travels around the world, which suggests she may have even visited Japan. It even appeared on the official LINE stickers and has become a familiar face of the Maison. It appears on the Tambour Spin Time Air Vivienne and Vivienne Bijou Secret watches.

The new model unveiled today showcases Vivienne in her most luxurious form, with a dial that changes appearance every time you check the time, concealing a jumping hour mechanism.

The three models are available in white, pink, and yellow gold cases, each with a rose-cut diamond-set crown. The Circus Acrobat model is housed in a white gold case. The mother-of-pearl dial seems to envelop Vivienne as she emerges from the smoke.

The pink gold model features Vivienne dressed as a fortune teller against a dark blue aventurine dial reminiscent of a star-studded night sky, with black diamond eyes and two small windows near her fingertips.

The yellow gold model is dressed as a casino dealer. The eyes are made of green tsavorite, and the dial is made of skarn, a mineral that represents the green of casino tables. Diamonds in colorful frames resembling casino chips further evoke the casino atmosphere.

The white gold model, featuring Vivienne in a circus acrobat costume, features a mother-of-pearl dial, which enhances her outfit with its soft iridescent glow.

Both models are equipped with the in-house movement, Cal. LV180, entirely designed and produced by the Maison's watchmaking atelier, La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, located in Geneva.

Special time readings

Two small apertures on the dial, which alternate between the hours, are hidden in a way that blends seamlessly into the surrounding design. To read the time, one reads the apertures pointed by Vivienne's hands. The numerals indicating the hours change instantly every 60 minutes.

As the new hour display is displayed, a mysterious symbol in keeping with the theme of the watch is displayed in the window where the previous hour display was located. This is the first time that a modern mechanical watch has used jumping hours, which alternate positions.

The minute hand extends from Vivienne's chest, a slim, almost transparent hand that circles the dial once every hour. The tips of the hands are designed with a tarot card, a playing card, and a juggling ball with a Monogram flower pattern, respectively, to indicate the minutes without compromising the watch's aesthetic. The tarot card, playing card, Monogram flower, and hour numerals were all hand-painted by artists in the Louis Vuitton atelier mentioned above.

The Tambour Slim Vivienne Jumping Hour achieves this groundbreaking hour display by combining a multi-arm Genoa mechanism (Maltese cross mechanism) with a complex multi-stage cam and spring-loaded ruby roller, which offers advantages over the traditional star wheel and jumper spring: energy efficiency, improved time display precision, and a longer movement lifespan.

In other words, the jumping hour display of this watch goes against the conventional wisdom of watchmaking, which favors simplicity over complexity, but it remains true to the worldview the Maison wishes to express and is a work that emphasizes the functionality and novelty of mechanical watches.
