[New for 2022] Breitling's new Superocean collection is a modern take on the 1960s classic.

Breitling has announced a new Superocean diver's watch. It comes in a wide variety of sizes, materials, and colors, and includes a limited-edition model designed in collaboration with professional surfer Kelly Slater. The design is based on the Superocean Slow Motion from the 1960s.

　Breitling unveiled the new Superocean diver's watch at Wheels & Waves, a surfing and biking festival held in Biarritz, a luxury resort town in southwestern France. The new Superocean attracted attention with its wide variety of case sizes, case materials, and colors, but what will delight fans of the original is the design that pays homage to the early Superocean Slow Motion model.

　The term "slow motion" comes from the central coaxial 60-minute chronograph featured in early Superocean models. Developed in the 1960s, when scuba diving was becoming popular, this model eliminated the seconds hand, which was not particularly important to divers, and instead featured a minute-based chronograph to measure elapsed time. The movement of the time slowly going around the dial once in 60 minutes was called "slow motion."

　The new model announced this time does not have a chronograph function, but has a center second hand like a regular three-hand watch. This makes it possible to know the exact time down to the second in a variety of situations, from leisure to business, and also has a clean design without push buttons.

　The distinctive pointer at the tip of the chronograph minute hand on the original model can still be seen on the new model. Of course, the elapsed time display function, essential for a diver's watch, is located on the outer bezel. The 44, 42, and 36mm models feature a unidirectional rotating mechanism, while the 46mm model features a patented locking bidirectional rotating mechanism.

　The movement used is the Breitling Caliber 17. Based on a general-purpose movement, it has been adjusted to achieve high precision and become a COSC-certified chronometer. While the power reserve of approximately 38 hours may be a little disappointing, this watch is designed as a versatile daily watch for any occasion, and the reliability of a proven movement is likely to be a major benefit. The affordable price is also a welcome addition.
