The Cuervo y Sobrinos Lonsdale is a must-have dress watch for cigar lovers.

Cuervo y Sobrinos has unveiled the Lonsdale, a vintage-inspired watch inspired by cigars. The case, designed to resemble a cigar box, houses not only the watch but also a cigar rest, cigar case, and accompanying NATO strap.

Cuervo y Sobrinos "Lonsdale" is inspired by cigars

　Cuervo y Sobrinos has unveiled a dress watch with a completely new case. The vintage-inspired watch, named "Lonsdale," features a 40mm case made of polished stainless steel with eye-catching lugs and a textured metallic dial featuring alpha hands and Arabic numerals.

　Lonsdale is a name for premium cigars. Its size is 6.5 inches (165 mm) x 42 ring gauge, and it is named after the sporting British earl, Lord Lonsdale, who favored this long cigar. There are three models named after the color of the "wrapper," the outermost leaf that gives the cigar its beautiful finish. They are Candela, Claro, and Oscuro, with the colors becoming darker in that order.

Distinctively shaped case

　What you'll notice about the Lonsdale is the distinctive shape of the stainless steel case, newly developed for this project. The horizontal lines of the lugs are straight and fan out along the caseband, giving the case a slight tonneau shape. However, stepped grooves at 3 and 9 o'clock visually slim the case.

　All surfaces of the case are polished. The sapphire crystal is a box-shaped, protruding double dome, accounting for 1.9 mm of the watch's overall thickness of 10.5 mm. The case back is engraved with the "coin slot" that was used to open the case back 80 years ago. The Lonsdale case back is actually screwed down, but the screws are hidden to maintain a look that is true to the original.

Clean retro dial

　The dials are available in three color variations, each inspired by the color of a cigar leaf: a silver dial with green indices and hands (Candela), a champagne and cream (Clare), and a brown and gold (Oscuro). The dials feature a sleek vertical satin finish, alpha central hour and minute hands, and retro sans-serif indices. The Cuervo y Sobrinos Habana logo is also reproduced as it was back then.

　Next to the small seconds hand, decorated with concentric circles, are the words "Unicos Importadores," a reference to Cuervo y Sobrinos, Cuba's former sole importer of luxury watches.

　Additionally, a railway minute track runs around the outer periphery of the dial, and the hour and minute hands, numerals, and dots at 6 and 12 o'clock are made of Super-LumiNova, which glows green in the dark, for enhanced visibility.

　The Lonsdale presentation case is styled after a luxury cigar box and is crafted from Spanish cedar, known for trapping the moisture necessary for cigar aging, with a leatherette cover featuring a smoke swirl pattern designed by Eric Giroux.

　Renowned watch designer Eric Giroud recently launched Somewhere, a personal side project designing non-watch objects, and his sleek, modernist motifs on the Lonsdale case are his first designs for Somewhere.

　The case contains not only the Lonsdale but also three accessories that cigar enthusiasts will love: a cigar rest, a cigar case, and a matching NATO watch strap. The strap has become a hot topic among smokers due to its resemblance to the silk ribbons used to bind high-quality cigars. The case's tray is removable, allowing it to be used as a convenient travel case for storing and protecting accessories and collectibles, as well as for transporting them.
